Rosa Västarna (The Pink Vests)

In the fall of 2015 there was an urgent need to welcome displaced people arriving at Stockholm’s central station. A small number of enthusiasts managed to engage and mobilize a large number of untrained volunteers to help those arriving in Stockholm. Thousands of volunteers offered water, food, shelter, transportation, clothing, information and sometimes a hug.

To increase visibility the volunteers wore pink reflective vests and with time the volunteers started, for practical reasons, referring to themselves as the Pink vests.

The operation at Stockholm central was the beginning of what would become Refugees Welcome Stockholm. Today’s needs have a less urgent character, but Refugees Welcome Stockholm has a contingency plan to gather the Pink vests again should a new crisis arise.
